Common questions

Decorative slat wood panels are walls turned into rhythm. Vertical wood slats spaced across a backing board, fitted edge to edge along a wall, ceiling, or screen, to give a flat surface depth, texture, and shadow. Light moves across the slats differently through the day. The room feels softer than a painted wall and more considered than wallpaper. WVH® slat panels come in real oak, walnut, smoked oak, and birch, plus felt-wrapped colour, fire-rated, and wood-effect formats. Some are acoustic. Some are pure decoration. All change how a wall reads.

Decorative slat panels are about how a wall looks. Acoustic slat panels are about how a wall looks AND how the room sounds. The two share the same slat profile and the same finishes. The difference sits behind the slats. Acoustic ranges, including Acupanel® Contemporary, Luxe, Colour, and Fire-Rated, mount the slats over a recycled felt backing that absorbs sound. Decorative ranges, including Acupanel® Elegance and Hydro, skip the felt because the slats are fitted to walls where sound treatment isn't the priority. If you want quiet, choose acoustic. If you want pattern, either works.

Anywhere a wall could be doing more than holding paint. Living rooms behind a sofa or a fireplace. Bedrooms behind a headboard. Hallways where the first impression lands. Dining rooms where the panel softens the room as much as it shapes it. Home offices on Zoom calls. Open-plan kitchens, where a panelled wall draws a quiet line between the cooking space and the living space. Stairwells, snugs, reading corners. For wet-zone walls, like behind a bath or a kitchen splashback, choose Acupanel® Hydro. For everything else, the acoustic and decorative ranges do the work.

Yes, with a few practical notes. Behind a TV, the slat texture catches the changing light from the screen and softens the wall the eye lands on most. Mount the TV on the wall first, leaving a service cavity for cables, then panel around or up to the bracket. For a fireplace, the rule is heat distance. Real timber and electric or biofuel fires are fine on the same wall as long as the panel keeps the manufacturer's stated clearance from the heat source. For wood-burning stoves with high radiant heat, fit the panel beyond the stove's hearth zone, never directly above or beside the firebox. If unsure, our team can review your install plan against the panel spec.

Yes. Ceiling installs are where slat panelling earns its quiet luxury reputation. The slats catch the light from below. The room feels enclosed without feeling closed in. Acoustic ranges quieten the room more from a ceiling than they would from a single wall, because sound travels upward as readily as outward. Ceilings need a more secure fixing than walls. Battens screwed into joists are the standard, with construction adhesive between batten and panel, and screws through the felt at panel ends. Each range carries its own ceiling install drawing.

The decorative slat collection covers most of the WVH® slat range. Acupanel® Contemporary is the core acoustic line in real oak, walnut, smoked oak, and birch slats over recycled felt. Acupanel® Luxe is the premium acoustic grade with wider, denser slats. Acupanel® Colour is felt-wrapped or painted slats for spaces where colour leads. Acupanel® Glow integrates LED lighting into the slat run. Acupanel® Fire-Rated meets commercial fire specifications for offices, restaurants, and public buildings. Acupanel® Square and Hexagon are mini decorative formats. Acupanel® Hydro is the wood-effect format for bathrooms and kitchens. Each range carries its own technical sheet and sample option.

Acupanel® mounts with construction adhesive to a clean, dry, dust-free wall, screwed through the felt at the top and bottom of each panel for a permanent fix. For uneven walls, or where wiring needs to run behind the panel, fit battens to the wall first and panel onto the battens. For maximum acoustic and insulation performance, batten the wall and fit rockwool in the cavity before the panels go on. That stack is the spec used in home cinemas, podcast booths, and recording studios. Cuts are made with a fine-tooth saw. Each panel has its own install guide and downloadable spec drawing on the site.

Yes. Slat panels in particular reward holding a piece in the room you'll fit it in. The way the slats catch a 7am light. The way the timber tone shifts under different bulbs. The way a felt backing reads against your existing walls. We send physical samples for every range. Samples arrive in a few days. Order the finishes you're between, hold them up on the wall, let the room tell you which one stays.

Slat panelling, properly fitted in a normal interior, is meant to live with the wall. Real timber takes on a patina over time, deepening in tone, settling into the room around it. The recycled felt backing on acoustic ranges is built to outlast multiple redecorations. Treat slat panelling as part of the architecture, not a finish you'll need to refresh.

50+ years in surface materials. The company started in the 1970s, sourcing the species most suppliers couldn't get hold of and learning the differences by hand. Half a century later, we still choose what goes on the walls. Acupanel® has become the benchmark slat panel on UK projects, in homes, offices, restaurants, recording studios, and public buildings. The Drew & Jonathan Home™ collaboration runs through our slat range. We supply architects, interior designers, contractors, and homeowners across the country. 5,000+ five-star reviews tell their own story.

We photograph every product as accurately as possible. Because we use real wood and natural materials, subtle variations in grain pattern and tone occur between production batches. This is a characteristic of genuine wood, not a defect. We always recommend ordering a sample to confirm the colour and texture in your own lighting.

The panel obtains an absorption coefficient of 0.97 at a frequency of 1,000 Hz. Acupanels are most efficient between 500 - 2,000 Hz meaning they are perfect for domestic and commercial use.

Handcrafted from Sustainable Materials

The Acupanel® acoustic felt is made from recycled plastic bottles, and all of the wood comes from sustainable forestry, making the panels not only incredibly attractive but also environmentally friendly.

When you buy an Acupanel®, you are not only transforming your space but by helping remove the waste from the world's oceans you are also doing something great for the environment.

FAQ

Do the panels come in larger sizes?

The panels only come in one size, but we have designed them to join both widthways and long ways seamlessly so any length or width can easily be achieved.

How do I install the panels?

If you are looking to obtain a class A sound absorption, then we recommend installing the panels with batons. However, if you would like to have them for decorative purposes while still providing some sound absorption, we recommend screwing the panels directly into the wall through the acoustic felt backing using black or grey screws depending on your choice of backing.

What is the lead time for Acupanel®?

The panels are usually in stock, so delivery takes 1-2 days. If we do have to wait for a new production run then it can be 2-3 weeks but please get in contact at the point of order, and we can confirm this right away.

Do you produce custom panel sizes?

We do not currently offer the panels in custom sizes; however, we have designed them to be easily cut if you need smaller. They also join together seamlessly if you need bigger.

Can the panels be used in a bathroom or kitchen?

The panels will be absolutely fine in these areas as long as they are not in direct contact of water.

Can the acoustical panels be used outside?

The Acupanel range is designed for indoor use only.

What do I do if I have plug sockets, windows or other items to install around?

It is straightforward to adjust the panels to fit around any object. You can cut the slats widthways with a saw, and you can cut the felt lengthways with a sharp blade to then apply around any item you may have on your surface.

On which surfaces can I install the Acupanel® panels?

You can mount the panels on all surfaces including brick, concrete and plasterboard walls.

Do the colours of the pictures look like the panels in real life?

The wood used is always from the same source so they will always look more or less the same. It is natural wood, however, so knots, slight cracks and colour variations can occur. Get in toch if you would like us to send you pictures of the exact batch you could potentially receive.

Can we come to see the panels?

Our Acupanel range is on display in our warehouse in Leighton Buzzard so if you would like to come and see the panels in person you are more than welcome.

How can I hide the edges of the panel?

The panels look beautiful as they are, but we do offer individual slats if you would like to install one to the side of your Acupanel hiding the edges.

Can I hide wires behind the panels?

You certainly can.

Can I apply anything behind the panels to increase sound insulation?

If installing with batons, then you can use mineral wool or other sound insulation material in-between the gaps which will increase the sound absorption properties even more.

What is your return policy?

You can return unused Acupanels within 30 days after delivery.
