How to install
  1. 1

    Prepare the Surface

Make sure the wall is clean, dry, flat and structurally sound. Plasterboard, tile backer, existing tile, brick and concrete all work. Remove dust, grease and any loose material, and sand glossy surfaces lightly so the adhesive can bond cleanly.

  2. 2

    Measure and Cut

Measure the wall height and plan your layout across the run. Use a fine-tooth saw, jigsaw or multi-tool to trim panels to size and to cut around taps, shower fixtures or any wall penetrations. Dry-fit the first row before committing.

  3. 3

    Apply the Adhesive

Using a standard caulking gun, apply WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant across the back of the panel in continuous vertical beads. The same product bonds the panel and waterproofs the joints, so no separate sealant is needed.

  4. 4

    Fit the Panels

Press the first panel firmly onto the substrate and check for plumb. Slot each following panel into the tongue of the previous one for a seamless join. Work along the wall without screws or visible fixings.

  5. 5

    Seal the Joints and Edges

Run a continuous bead of WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant along every tongue and groove joint, around any cut edges, and at the perimeter where the panels meet the shower tray, tiles or wall returns. Smooth each bead with a damp finger for a clean line.

  6. 6

    Final Checks

Wipe any excess sealant from the surface while it is still fresh. Let the installation cure according to the sealant instructions before exposing it to direct water. Once cured, the wall is ready for everyday bathroom use.

Overview Say hello to the Acupanel® Hydro in white — our iconic slat wall panel, reimagined for the spaces where style meets steam.

Bathrooms, shower enclosures, wet rooms, kitchen splashbacks — these are the rooms that deserve beautiful panelling just as much as any other in your home, but until now, traditional wood slat panels simply weren't up to the job. The Acupanel® Hydro range changes that. Built around the same slat profile that has made our panels one of the most sought-after wall finishes in interior design, the Hydro takes that formula and makes it water-ready.

Each panel features a polystyrene (PS) core wrapped in a clear coat PVC layer, creating a surface that shrugs off splashes, steam, and humidity without breaking a sweat. That PVC coating also makes cleaning genuinely effortless — a quick wipe is all it takes to keep your panels looking as fresh as the day they went up.

Despite their robust construction, Hydro panels are remarkably lightweight, making them easy to carry, cut, and position — even when working in the confines of a shower enclosure. Installation is handled via a tongue and groove system — panels click neatly together for a seamless, professional finish. For the cleanest look, panels should be fixed using a grab adhesive only; avoid screws, which would detract from the seamless finish. Sealant should be applied along the tongue and groove edge to close the small gap between panels, preventing water and moisture from getting behind the installation.

The white colour takes a smooth, grain-free approach — a clean, contemporary finish that works brilliantly in minimalist and monochrome bathroom schemes.

To complete the installation properly, we also offer a dedicated WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant, an all-in-one solution designed specifically to work alongside these panels. Available in black and white.

Due to the tongue and groove nature of these panels, when you join them together, the width is reduced by 10mm. Please allow for this reduction when ordering your panels, especially for large scale project. If you need any assistance calculating the quantity of the panels, please contact our sales team.

Installation & Downloads Installing these panels is simple with the tongue and groove edge, which helps create a seamless finish on your walls. The panels can easily be cut down to size and around fixtures and fittings as required. When installing these panels, you will need to apply a sealant along the panel joins as well as the top and bottom of the panels for a watertight finish.

We recommend using our WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant, an all-in-one solution that is designed for use near water and high-humidity areas. For further installation guidance, please refer to our technical sheet.

What sets it apart

Fully waterproof

Fully waterproof

PVC clear coat on a solid polystyrene core. The panel handles steam, humidity and direct water contact without swelling, warping or rotting, so it performs where real-wood slat panels cannot.

Anti-microbial surface

The non-porous PVC face slows the growth of mould and mildew and wipes clean of soap scum, limescale and day-to-day bathroom grime, which keeps the finish looking its best for longer.
Low maintenance

Low maintenance

A damp cloth is all it takes. No oiling, no sealing over time, no refinishing. The panel keeps its appearance through years of bathroom use with nothing more than routine cleaning.

Tongue-and-groove install

Each panel slots neatly into the next for a seamless slat run with no visible fixings. Paired with WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant, the joints stay watertight throughout the installation.
Bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms

Specified for bathrooms, ensuites, wet rooms, utility spaces, kitchen splashbacks and shower enclosures. Any interior surface that meets moisture, spray or humidity.

Slat wall panels, engineered for water.

The iconic slat aesthetic, ready for water, steam and daily humidity. A smooth, clean white face runs across every panel, sealed under a clear PVC coat on a solid polystyrene core. The panel holds its shape and finish where finished timber would need ongoing sealing, oiling or replacement.

Installation is a single-product job. Tongue and groove slats slot together for a clean, continuous run, bonded and sealed with WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant. The result: a bright, architectural slat wall for shower enclosures, kitchens, wet rooms, splashbacks and utility spaces, with none of the timber upkeep.

Frequently asked questions

Acupanel® Hydro panels are built around a solid polystyrene core, printed with a wood-grain or plain colour finish, and protected by a clear PVC coat on every face. The core is fully waterproof and the outer layer resists scratches and daily bathroom use. There is no MDF, no timber and no acoustic felt in the construction, which is what allows the panel to live in wet environments without swelling or rotting.

Yes. The PVC clear coat seals the surface of every face, and the polystyrene core is waterproof all the way through. The panels can handle direct water contact, steam and high humidity, which is what makes them suitable for inside shower enclosures, wet rooms and splashbacks. The only requirement is to seal the tongue and groove joints and any cut edges during installation, so water cannot travel behind the installation.

Yes. Acupanel® Hydro is designed for direct use inside shower enclosures, wet rooms and around baths. The panel itself handles steam, humidity and direct water contact without issue. For the installation to remain watertight long-term, all tongue and groove joints, cut edges and the perimeter where panels meet the shower tray, tiles or adjacent walls need to be sealed with the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant.

No. Because the core is polystyrene rather than timber or MDF, there is no moisture absorption and nothing for water to swell or rot. The panels stay dimensionally stable through steam, splash and direct water contact, which is the main reason they are a more reliable option than real-wood slat panels in wet environments.

Yes. The PVC outer coat is non-porous and the surface carries anti-microbial properties that slow the growth of mould and mildew. As with any wet-room surface, regular cleaning keeps the finish in its best condition.

Acupanel® Hydro is formulated for the heat and humidity of a standard bathroom, wet room or shower enclosure. Steam rooms and saunas operate at sustained temperatures above that range, and we would recommend getting in touch with our team before ordering so we can check the specifics of your install.

No. The Hydro range is a decorative wet-room panel rather than an acoustic panel. There is no PET felt backing and the core is solid polystyrene, which means the panel is not designed to absorb sound. If acoustic performance is the priority, our Acupanel® Acoustic range is the product to look at instead.

No. Acupanel® Hydro is not fire-rated and is intended for domestic bathroom, shower and wet-room use. For commercial or residential projects that require a fire-rated wall finish, our Acupanel® Fire-Rated range is tested and certified for those applications.

Hydro panels can be installed onto any flat, solid and structurally sound surface, including plasterboard, tile backer board, brick, concrete and existing tiles. The surface should be clean, dry and free of dust or grease before the adhesive is applied, which gives the bond the best chance to cure cleanly.

Hydro panels install with a tongue and groove system and a single product. Spread WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant across the back of each panel, press it onto the substrate, and slot the next panel into the tongue of the previous one. Run a continuous bead of the same sealant along each joint, around any cut edges and at the perimeter where panels meet the shower tray, tiles or wall returns. Smooth the bead with a damp finger for a neat finish. No screws are needed, and no separate adhesive or sealant is needed either.

Yes. Hydro panels are sold in fixed 2400mm or 3000mm lengths and can be cut to fit with a fine-tooth saw, jigsaw or multi-tool. For any cut-out made around taps, shower fixtures or wall penetrations, seal thoroughly around the exposed cut edge with the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant. This keeps the waterproof layer continuous and stops moisture from reaching the core through the cut.

At terminations and perimeter edges, the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive and Sealant is used as a visible bead to create a clean seal. It comes in black and white, so you can match the slat gap colour for a near-invisible line. Colour-matched sealant gives the tidiest finish where the panels meet shower trays, tiles, wall returns or adjacent walls.

Acupanel® Hydro Waterproof Panel FAQs

Are the Hydro panels fully waterproof or water resistant?

The Acupanel® Hydro panels are fully waterproof. The clear coat PVC layer creates a sealed surface that can handle direct water contact, making it suitable for use inside showers, wet rooms, and other areas of prolonged moisture exposure.

Do you offer samples?

Yes, you can purchase a sample by clicking here. Our sample service is the perfect way to make sure you choose the right colour for your project. We offer a full sample refund upon your Acupanel® Hydro panel purchase — simply email us after placing your panel order to claim this.

How do I install these panels?

Acupanel® Hydro panels use a tongue and groove system — each panel slots neatly into the next for a clean, seamless finish. Panels should be fixed to the wall using a suitable grab adhesive only. We recommend the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive, which is formulated for use in wet and humid environments. Do not use screws, as these will detract from the seamless finish. Apply sealant along the tongue and groove edge to close the small gap between panels and prevent moisture ingress. Always ensure the substrate behind is dry, flat, and structurally sound before installation.

Can I use these panels in a shower enclosure?

Yes — that is exactly what they are designed for. The Acupanel® Hydro range is built to withstand the steam, humidity, and direct water contact found in shower enclosures. Ensure all panel edges and joins are properly sealed with the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant during installation, and apply sealant along the tongue and groove edge to prevent water and moisture from getting behind the panels.

Will the panels warp or swell if they get wet?

No. Unlike natural wood products, the PS core and PVC coating means the Acupanel® Hydro panels will not swell, warp, or degrade when exposed to moisture — making them a far more reliable choice for wet environments than standard timber slat panels.

What surfaces can these be installed onto?

You can mount the panels on all solid, flat surfaces, including brick, concrete, and plasterboard. The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dust or grease before applying the adhesive to ensure a strong, lasting bond.

Can I cut the panels to size?

Yes — the Acupanel® Hydro panels can be cut using a fine-tooth saw or multi-tool to fit your space. When installing a cut panel — for example, fitting around taps, fixtures, or other wall penetrations — ensure you seal thoroughly around all exposed cut edges with the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant. This is essential to maintain the waterproof integrity of the installation and prevent moisture from entering behind the panels at any exposed point.

Are custom sizes available?

The Acupanel® Hydro panels are available in standard sizes only. However, the panels can be easily cut to fit any space — please refer to the cutting guidance above.

How do I finish and hide the edges of the panels?

For a neat, professional finish at panel edges and terminations, we recommend using the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant — available in black and white. It can be used to create a clean seal at the perimeter. Colour-matched sealant is particularly effective at delivering a tidy edge where the panels meet tiles, shower trays, or adjacent walls.

Can the panels be used outdoors?

No — the Acupanel® Hydro range is designed for interior use only. Whilst the panels are fully waterproof, they are not intended for exterior applications and should not be installed outdoors.

How do I clean the panels?

Simply wipe down with a damp cloth or mild household cleaner. The PVC clear coat makes the surface non-porous and resistant to soap scum, limescale, and general bathroom grime. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which could dull the surface over time.

Do the panels look like real wood?

The oak, walnut and grey oak colours feature a printed wood grain effect that gives a convincing, natural-looking finish with real depth and character — without the maintenance requirements of real timber. The white colour has a smooth, clean face with no wood grain print — ideal for a more contemporary or minimalist aesthetic.

Is the waterproof adhesive an adhesive and a sealant?

Yes — the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant is a two-in-one formula. Use it to bond the panels to the wall, and then apply it along all tongue and groove edges, cut edges, and panel perimeters to create a continuous waterproof seal. You do not need a separate adhesive and a separate sealant — this product handles both.

How do I use the adhesive during installation?

Apply the product to the back of each panel to bond it securely to the substrate, then use it to seal along the tongue and groove joint between panels, around any cut edges, and at the perimeter where the panels meet adjacent surfaces such as shower trays, tiles, and wall returns. Apply sealant beads using a standard caulking gun and smooth to a neat finish with a damp finger or smoothing tool.

Why do I need to seal the tongue and groove edges?

The tongue and groove system creates a neat, seamless join between panels, but there is a small gap at the joint. Applying the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant along this edge closes that gap and prevents water and moisture from working their way behind the installation — which is essential for maintaining the waterproof integrity of the finished wall.

Why do I need to seal the cut edges?

When a panel is cut to fit — for example, to accommodate taps, shower fixtures, or other wall penetrations — the cut edge exposes the panel core, which is not waterproof. Sealing thoroughly around all exposed cut edges with the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant is essential to prevent moisture from entering behind the panels at those points.

Which adhesive colour should I choose?

Black works well alongside the oak, walnut and grey oak panels, as it blends into the black slat gaps for a seamless finish. The white pairs naturally with the white colourway, blending into the white slat gaps effortlessly. As the product is used both behind the panels and at visible joints and edges, choosing a colour that complements your panel will give the neatest overall result.

Can I use a different advesive or sealant?

Whilst other moisture-resistant grab adhesives and bathroom sealants may be used, we recommend the WVH® Waterproof Adhesive & Sealant as it is specifically formulated for use with these panels in wet environments. Using the recommended product ensures the best bond, the most reliable waterproof seal, and helps maintain the long-term integrity of your installation.

Are the panels mould resistant?

The Acupanel® Hydro panels are formulated to resist mould and mildew growth at lower levels, as long as the panels are cleaned regularly.

Can I use the waterproof panels in a steam room or sauna?

The product is formulated for wet and humid environments typical of bathrooms and shower enclosures. For steam rooms or saunas with extreme and sustained heat, please get in touch with our team to discuss suitability before ordering.
