Dating back to the 1300s, the Dutch used these sophisticated panels to shield the bottom half of plaster walls from marks left by a plethora of sharp objects that you’d find in the 14th century, including chairs, horse spurs and even sword scabbards. Today, however, wainscoting is used to add depth, texture and character to rooms. You can learn more about the intriguing history of wainscoting in our recent article.
